An Eternal Polyseme

There exists a delicate beauty everywhere around , that symbolizes love , admiration , appreciation , gratitude , joy and every emotion one can think of . There is a wealth of culture behind this symbolism . The Rose , a flower that holds its place in every scene . From history to literature , from reel to real , from numerology to astrology rose is the eternal polyseme , the one with multiple meanings.

I noticed this , when I passed a flower boutique the other day . There were numerous roses around , all were equally graceful . But the customers were choosing them based on different elements , including colour , the petals and its bloom . The red roses were picked immediately and some selected the pink ones , yellow roses seemed very soothing and the bunch of white roses added purity to the whole collection .Pondering upon this selection a bit further , I was surprised to know that this flower has been of great importance right from the past .

The number of petals were often associated with numerology and its beauty is said to symbolize the venus . Mythology says it represents an immortal love that withstands time and even death and is considered as a symbol of balance in tarot . It has delicate petals contrasting the defensive thorns . A wild rose being placed at the door of the room where secretive matters were discussed , stood as a protector of confidentiality in the ancient Rome. Its position in literature is well known to all . The association of rose has changed and evolved from every poet to poet and author to author . Some have related it to elegance and some to the imperfections that accompany the gorgeousness .

Coveted through the ages for its appeal and intoxicating fragrance , rose adds glory to every situation , from greeting to farewell .

  1. As a fan of the wild roses of Cape Breton Island, I too, have written about roses. Where you explore the historical relevance, I have written a song around the life cycle of the rose in comparison to a love story. If I knew how to make it into perfume, I would share my favourite flower with the world. I was happy to read this. Thanks for writing it. 🙂
